Data visualisation is the process of presenting data in graphical formats to enhance the viewers understanding of the meaning of the data.
In an organisational context data visualisation has the potential to be an extremely important management tool. Graphical representations of data can make it easier for people to see structures, relationships, timelines and changes within data.
Many organisations however, are unable to take advantage of this potential. Either their existing systems have limited reported facilities that do not take advantage of data visualisation techniques or they have a number of discrete systems from which it is difficult to extract data into a consolidated format or even to combine different data streams.
Dynistics has created a solution to this problem through its Active Dashboards product. Active Dashboards combines data visualisation functionality with the ability to draw data from a variety of different sources. From a visualisation perspective the product offers a wide range of graphical entities to match the data types under review and the type of analysis required. For instance;
- Historical trends of, say, sales data can be represented very effectively through interactive charts
- Real-time data such as calls being answered in a call centre can be displayed in a dial format (like a car speedometer).
- Data sets with clear relationships between values and required actions (e.g. measuring daily sales targets) can be represented by traffic light graphics.
By drawing from multiple data sources Active Dashboards creates a single management dashboard that provides immediate focus on the key parameters that an organisation wishes to measure.
The introduction of the power of data visualisation, via Active Dashboards , to our clients has produced many benefits. The ability to focus on key cost centres has resulted in some substantial savings on energy and printer resources, for instance. Other organisations have seen productivity rise because they can measure outputs from multiple process points in a consolidated format. Clients have cited more strategic benefits such as the ability to communicate directly and understandably with the workforce or even with customers (we have clients who display dashboard‘s in public places).
